June 25, 2015
To commemorate its 21st birthday, the Small Press Expo (SPX) is proud to announce that SPX 2015 will spotlight creators who have only worked in the 21st Century. We are pleased to announce that our first 21st Century / 21st Birthday guests are Kate Beaton, Luke Pearson and Noelle Stevenson.

Her humorous, quirky takes on history, literature and famous people propelled Kate Beaton’s Hark! A Vagrant!
series of webcomics into a New York Times bestseller, as well as
winning both the Harvey and Ignatz Awards.
SPX 2015 will see the debut of Ms. Beaton’s latest compendium of comics, Step Aside Pops! A Hark! A Vagrant Collection for Drawn and Quarterly. She also just published her very first children’s book, The Princess and The Pony from Scholastic Books.

Luke’s Hildafolk series
started as a single issue comic that expanded into three volumes of
Scandinavian inspired, critically acclaimed children’s books for the
artistically daring publisher Nobrow.
Mr. Pearson’s notoriety with the Hilda series and his other comics have led him to storyboard episodes of Adventure Time, as well as illustration assignments for such prestigious outlets as The New York Times, The New Yorker and the New Republic.

Noelle’s hit webcomic Nimona has just been nominated for a 2015 Eisner Award for Best Digital/Web Comic, on top of having the first Nimona graphic novel released last month by Harpercollins.
Ms. Stevenson was one of the primary writers of the hit series Lumberjanes from Boom! Studios, which has just been optioned for a movie. She is now writing for such Marvel titles as Thor and Runaways, as well for the Disney series Wander Over Yonder.
SPX is honored to host Ms. Stevenson as guest for the first time.
SPX 2015 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20,
and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables and 22
programming slots to entertain, enlighten and introduce attendees to the
amazing world of independent and small press comics. Plan your trip to SPX 2015 here!
SPX, the Small Press Expo is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of
independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons.
SPX is a registered 501©3 nonprofit that brings together more than 650
artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and
distributors each year.
Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative
comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and
illustrators. The expo includes a series of panel discussions and
interviews with this year’s guests.
Just Ayo SPAM tonight. But he’s right. Luke is the level best.
Everybody take some time out of your day to read one of my favourite comics ever published.
Click-through for the rest.
Luke Pearson is the real thing.
I love this comic which feels a lot like my own views toward intersecting lives, perception of strangers, origins and empathy. Click through for the full strip. Excellent work.

Meeting Luke at SPX this past weekend was a great thrill. Mellowest guy ever.
We were thrilled to have he and the gang from No Brow Press at SPX for the first time. It is a long haul to Bethesda from their home base in the UK, but I think people were thrilled to have a chance to pick up their stuff.
Actually, I know it because they barely had any books left to take back with them!
One of my long time wishlist (ok, more like wishlust) publishes to get to SPX…
And we did it!
Illustration for The Manual
Here are Michael DeForge and Luke Pearson at SPX conspiring to make even more mind blowing comics for us to drool over.
This was the first year at the show for both Nobrow, who brought Luke, and Koyama Press, who brought Michael. We can’t thank both Annie Koyama and Sam Arthur enough for coming to the show with these guys.
I am in awe they were both at the show, no less I was able to catch them in the same place at the same time.
Sorta like finding a large gold nugget and a diamond while digging in the backyard….
Warren
Luke Pearson is coming to SPX!
A little back story.
Our Exec. Dir. Warren was really, really taken with Luke’s work when they met at TCAF this year. He raved up and down about, in fact. So while in T'ronto, Warren was all:
“Hey I just met you… And this is crazy.
But here’s my number. So call me maybe.”
Well that maybe became September 15-16, 2012 thanks to our friends at NoBrow. They’re bringing Luke stateside for the ride to SPX 2012 as they make their own first trip to the show.
If you’ve never checked out NoBrow’s stuff prepare to double your estimated budget for SPX. You will want to buy all of the things. But you will have to get in line behind me.
Also, if you haven’t seen the Guardian’s “A Cartoonist’s Worldview” series you are missing out on beautiful work from Gabrielle Bell, Kate Beaton, Tom Gauld, Ivan Brunetti, Lilli Carré, Nick Gurewitch, and more!
My strip for the Guardian’s cartoon special. You can read all the other ones here.
