Come see Heidi Macdonald, Goddess of The Beat, at the Library of Congress!!

Heidi will be giving a talk at the Library of Congress titled After Watchmen and Maus: Exploring the Graphic Novel. It will be held Noon, September 13 in the Madison Building of the Library of Congress (Capitol South Metro stop).

She was kind enough to donate her entire mini-comics collection to the SPX Collection at the Library of Congress. I cannot begin to list the indie comics treasures that will now be preserved until the Sun goes supernova.

Here is Heidi next to her treasure trove of minis in the back my car.

image

And here are all those historical goodies being delivered to Georgia Higley and Megan Halsband of the Serials Division of the Library of Congress.

imageBe sure to come out and hear Heidi, not only because its going to be great, but this talk will NOT be given at SPX.

Oh, and stay tuned for some samples out of her collection, right here at SPX.TUMBLR.COM, your home for the coolest site on indie comics.

C u at SPX,

Warren

SPX Donates Graphic Novels to the District of Columbia Public Library

Ok, we had the turnover today of a bunch of really cool books from Adhouse, Koyama Press, Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics that were chosen by the collections staff at DCPL. Check out this table of goodies:

image

They chose 63 different titles, over 250 books in all that were donated by us with mucho support from the publishers

Catherine Fraas and I got to schmooze with the Chief Librarian and her staff, they were ecstatic over the new books they got from publishers they never had ordered books from before.

Here is me yucking it up with Ginnie Cooper, the Chief Librarian, e are both Pogo fans.

image

And to show you the level of hipness in their selections, here is Ginnie holding a Michael DeForge book from Koyama Press!!!

image

Next year, Catherine will take this over from me. Though indeed I will butt in on the PR shots, of course!!

See you in like 10 days,

Warren

Small Press Expo Announces the DC Public Library as the 2013 Recipient of the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program

The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce that the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) is the 2013 recipient of the Small Press Expo Library Gift Program.

This program is an outright gift of graphic novels to the library as selected by the library’s Collections Specialist, who selected 63 titles comprising 251 individual books. These books will be distributed to the Rosedale and William O. Lockridge/Bellevue branches.

Today there was a formal presentation of the books to the the library by Small Press Expo Executive Director Warren Bernard. The event was held at the Rosedale Neighborhood Library.

“The library takes pride in offering the books that people want at their library,” said Ginnie Cooper, chief librarian for the DC Public Library. “With the growing popularity of graphic novels, this gift allows District residents the opportunity to discover new titles and characters at their Library.  We cannot thank the Small Book Expo enough for this donation.”

“It is with pleasure that Small Press Expo adds to the graphic novel collection of the DC Public Library,” said Warren Bernard, Executive Director of the Small Press Expo. “We are thrilled at the selections made by their collections staff and we know that the readers will enjoy them. We are especially proud that these books will find their way the readers of all ages who normally would not have a chance to see this great work being done in the graphic novel field.”

The books were selected by the library’s collection staff from the offerings of publishers Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Koyama Press, all of whom support this program.

SPX’s Graphic Novel Gift Program is an expansion of the philanthropic and charitable endeavors that are part of its corporate charter, and is in addition to SPX’s annual support to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The targets of this program are public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area as selected by the Small Press Expo.

The goals of this program are:

  • Facilitate the availability of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
  • Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
  • Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.

SPX will be held Saturday, September 14 from 11am-7pm and Sunday, September 15, 12-6pm at The North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center in North Bethesda, Maryland.

Admission is $10 for a single day and $15 for both days.

Your mission, DC Metro, should you choose to accept it, is to use and abuse your office copy machine to run off as many of these SPX 2013 flyers as you can possibly get away with (click the pic for a two-sheet).

Then, share them far and wide, wherever our people congregate!

Send us pics of where you dropped them and we may drop some valuable prizes on you - free posters, totes and passes to the show!

Godspeed,

I believe this blows us past 200 rooms, which is half the place given over to comics madness. Don’t miss it - comics sleep-away camp is calling!
