Thansk so much, Eric for the kind words!

Well, I spent about four hours last night and this morning writing, formatting, linking and tagging a detailed SPX report that our flog system just decided to erase. So much for that. At least the photos were saved, so here you go, I don’t have the patience to write it again. Let’s just say SPX was indeed the Best Con Ever and leave it at that. I’m going to go punch a wall.

fantagraphics:

We’re pleased to announce that we have a few exclusive bonus items to give away to our customers at Small Press Expo this weekend! Since a few artists with debut books can’t make it to the show, we have SPX signature plates, all exclusive to the show and all with brand new artwork!

Folks who purchase Ron Rege Jr.’s The Cartoon Utopia will receive one of these hand-drawn, hand-colored plates along with the book. Ron sent us a scan of his lettering, we printed them, and then Ron drew his special signature-drawing on each one, with lots of unique variations.

With Carol Tyler’s You’ll Never Know Book 3: Soldier’s Heart you’ll get one of these beautiful signed two-sided double-bookmarks, handcrafted by Carol using little fake flowers and bits of sandpaper from her dad’s workshop! They’re like paper nunchucks of beauty and wonderfulness.

Buying Johnny Ryan’s Prison Pit Book 4? You’ll get one of these signed plates featuring a drawing by Johnny done specially for SPX. (This photo is of a full sheet before we cut ‘em up.)

All are available exclusively at our SPX table this weekend while supplies last, first come first served! (And if there’s any left over, we’ll maybe make them available to our mail-order customers.)

Photos from the SPX Library Gift Presentation to Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library

Just in case you missed this earlier today…

The Small Press Expo announced the Enoch Pratt Free Library as the recipient of the 2012 SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program. $5000 worth of books - 240 graphic novels, 40 titles!

Here’s a few snaps of SPX honcho, Warren Bernard delivering the gift to the librarians of Enoch Pratt!

SPX would like to thank Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Top Shelf for their continued support of this program!

This is not to mention the support of all the attendees of SPX. It is only your visit to SPX each year makes the Library Gift Program possible.

We quite literally could not do this without you.

Huge thanks to the fine folks @Fantagraphics. No sooner did Warren mention that SPX’s homies at @librarycongress were missing 20 or so issues of Mome, those very books landed on the doorstep of SPX HQ. There are some solid citizens at FANTA! Thanks so much. These books will live on forever in the care of the LOC. (Taken with Instagram)

Let’s Make it Official - Small Press Expo announces Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez as guests for SPX 2012

For Immediate Release

Bethesda, Maryland; February 21, 2012 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons, welcomes acclaimed independent cartoonists Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez as guests for SPX  2012.

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the first issue of Love and Rockets, and SPX is proud to be the only East Coast comic festival to have Jaime and Gilbert as guests for this years celebration.

In addition to celebrating the anniversary of their works, this will mark the first time in the 21st century that previously announced guests Chris Ware and Dan Clowes will be at an event with Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez.

There are four new books tentatively scheduled to be released by Fantagraphics Books by Jaime and Gilbert in 2012 prior to SPX, including Love and Rockets New Stories #5. Other books include two collections and a companion volume:

The Adventures of Venus by Gilbert Hernandez

God and Science by Jaime Hernandez

The Love and Rockets Companion by Marc Sobel & Kristy Valenti

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez ushered in the 1980s as bold and vibrant new voices in the comics medium at a time when the comics publishing industry had all but given up on independent artists. After sending their self-published Love and Rockets #1 – an intoxicating blend of punk rock, sci-fi, B-movies, and seemingly the entire history of cartooning – to The Comics Journal, the series opened the gateway for a new generation of cartooning talent.

Although Love and Rockets has been relaunched and reformatted several times throughout its history, Los Bros have continued with the series non-stop since that first self-published issue, through the evolution of their individual artistic styles and concerns.

Gilbert in particular has published prolifically with a variety of publishers, but the long-form stories of Gilbert’s town of Palomar and Jaime’s Locas remain among the most respected and loved independent comics.

Their compelling characters have grown older with their devoted long-term readers, even as they have continued to attract new readers.

Details of events featuring Los Bros Hernandez will be released as planning is finalized. Pre-Expo interview opportunities may be available.

About SPX

SPX is a registered 501©3 non-profit that brings together more than 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators, as well as a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year’s guests.

As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which gifts graphic novels to public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.

For more information on the CBLDF, go to their website at http://www.cbldf.org.

SPX also preserves the works of the creators in the indie comics community through the Small Press Expo Collection at the Library of Congress, a first of its kind relationship between a festival and a major collecting institution in the United States.

SPX 2012 will be held Saturday, September 15  and Sunday, September 16.  For more information on the Small Press Expo, please visit http://www.spxpo.com.
