After just 24 hours Damn Fine Coffee! is over 250% funded! I’m blown away! Thank you all so much for your support. You’ve guaranteed that the zine will not only happen, it’ll be the best that it can be and will make it to many more hands than I expected. I’m so glad that everyone’s excited about this project, has been contributing and sharing it with their friends, and I’m psyched to get your zines and prints and drawings into your hands.
It hardly needs to be said, but I just have to thank all my talented contributors again, as none of this would have been possible without them. There is just so much gorgeous work in the zine. Some you might have already enriched your eyes upon and plenty that will be an excellent surprise. I hope you get the chance to check it all out either by pre-ordering through Kickstarter or by picking up a copy of Damn Fine Coffee! at SPX this year!

Big Announcements Coming for SPX 2012

Over the next few weeks look for official confirmation of several major guests for SPX 2012 (happening September 15th and 16th in our ancestral home, Bethesda, Maryland).

At the Ignatz Awards for last year’s show, Exec Director, Warren Bernard was able to unofficially announce the attendance of both Dan Clowes and Chris Ware.

Look for that to get really quite official in the next few days.

More Guests, LOC Collection Update

February will bring further details on additional (extremely exciting - and I am not joking) guests for this year’s show as well as an update on the “first class” of submissions to the SPX Permanent Collection at the Library of Congress.

Thank You, Dino

Along with material collection in connection with SPX 2011, creator Dean Haspiel made a tremendously generous donation of his mini-comics collection. You’ll see samples from that donation crop up here from time to time.

Let me tell you, Dean has some great, great stuff. And now thanks to the Library of Congress, all of that rare material documenting the evolution of some of the best talents in comics, will be preserved forever.

Thanks for keeping up with the Small Press Expo on Tumblr. We’re doing our level best for you.

I can answer that to some extent. All Ignatz award nominees are automatically sent to LOC for inclusion in the SPX collection. There is an SPX advisory board to facilitate the inclusion of other works. Submissions were also accepted from additional exhibitors at the show. The LOC folks in attendance left with armloads of mini comics, graphic novels, etc. I think they were totally blown away!

Yes, it’s librarian neepiness, but I’m really curious how the Library of Congress is going to organize these comics. Also curious how the LOC will determine which small press comics to add to their archives. Does anyone know if they are currently collecting from schools?

spx:

I posted a few shots earlier, via our Instagram feed, of some SPX guests: Roz Chast, Diane Noomin, Ann Telnaes, Jim Woodring and Jen Sorenson - along with friend of the show, Jonathan Barli and a couple of SPX staffers visiting the Library of Congress.

Here are a few more shots courtesy of SPX Exec. Director, Warren Bernard to whose sway we owe the visit. Many, many thanks to Sara Duke and Martha Kennedy of the LOC for being such wonderful and accomodating hosts.

These are the folks that will be taking care of YOUR WORK at the Library of Congress and I am very happy to tell you that they are simply awesome folks. We’re astoundingly lucky to have such great partners for the SPX collection at the LOC.

A Project We Could Use Your Help With!

Hey gang,

Since the #comics category on Tumblr is all-encompassing we’d love your help in connecting with small press, alternative or web comic type folks that are active on Tumblr. We’ve worked on finding all of our regular SPX exhibitors but we’d love your help in filling out the list.

The folks you recommend don’t need to be SPX exhibitor by any means - we just want to keep track of all the folks in that space that are active on Tumblr to make them easier to suss out amongst the broader comics-related stuff!

With your help, we’ll create a directory page right here on the SPX site with links to everyone’s work. If you have suggestions please drop them in our Askhole.

Please do reblog this around so that we can gather as many small press folks as possible - artists, publishers, web folk - we’d love to collect’em all!

Thanks!

— MDT

2013 Special Guests

Small Press Expo is pleased to announce Seth, Gary Panter, Lisa Hanawalt, Gene Yang and Frank Santoro as special guests at SPX 2013, to be held Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15.  We are honored that both Seth and Gary Panter will be making their first SPX appearances at this year’s show.

Seth
Creator and advocate of a Canadian design aesthetic, Seth is best known to the comics world as the artist/writer of the long running Palookaville comic, as well as his graphic novels Wimbledon Green and George Sprott (1895-1975), which was originally serialized in the New York Times. He is also known for his book design work for such series as The Complete Peanuts, Nancy and Melvin Monster, in addition to The Portable Dorothy Parker.

Gary Panter
Painter, poster artist, cartoonist, commercial artist, and set designer, polymath Gary Panter has covered the gamut. Best known to the comics world for his long running, post-apocalyptic Jimbo series as well as his graphic novel Dal Tokyo, he also won an Emmy Award for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, and the Chrysler Award for his influence in graphic design.

Lisa Hanawalt
Lisa Hanawalt has vaulted from her Ignatz Award winning mini-comics Stay Away From Other People and I Want You, to illustrating for such periodicals as the New York Times Op-Ed page, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Bloomberg Business Week, as well as McSweeney’s and The Believer. Her latest book is My Dirty Dumb Eyes, a compendium of her work being published this May by Drawn & Quarterly.

Gene Yang
Gene Yang, creator behind the award winning American Born Chinese, is returning to the graphic novel field with a two volume set, Boxers & Saints, to be released this fall by First Second Books. Set in China in 1900, it tells the story of the Boxer rebellion and how the teemagers of the day used their “super heroes” from Chinese opera as inspirations to fight against foreign invaders.

Frank Santoro
Frank Santoro is back with his latest work, Pompei, published by Picturebox. His Storeyville was one of the most influential comics of the 1990’s, leading to its reprinting in book form in 2007. He now runs the Santoro Correspondence Course For Comic Book Makers, which carries on the tradition of correspondence courses for cartoonists that stretches back over century, now in an online form utilizing the latest in collaborative technology.
