More love for Team Cul de Sac!
Get on out to Politics and Prose to meet the Team Cul De Sac gang:
Tomorrow, July 11th 7PM
Politics & Prose 5015 Connecticut Ave NW Washington, DC 20008
In 2009 Cartoonist Thompson announced his diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s. The newly-released Team Cul de Sac book serves as a showcase of original artwork donated to benefit parkinson’s research. Edited by Chris Sparks, the book features the work of dozens of contributing artists.
(…that would be Bill Watterson’s piece you’re seeing above).
SPX won’t be onsite this time out but if you missed the TCdS event at One More Page books a few weeks back, show some love this time out.

Ok kids.  Here’s something you need to get on the calendar.
Tomorrow Chris Sparks’ labor of love, Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson’s is hitting the streets.
Celebrating the work of DC-area cartoonist Richard Thompson, who has been battling Parkinson’s for several years, the book features renditions of Thompson’s Cul de Sac characters by some of the most amazing names in comics.
Folks like: Bill (fricking) Watterson of Calvin and Hobbes fame, Garry Trudeau (Doonesbury), Nick Galifianakis, Mo Willems (The Pigeon books), Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine), Pat Oliphant (Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist), Gene Weingarten and David Clark (Barney & Clyde), Mason Mastroianni (B.C.), Roger Langridge (Muppet Show comic book, Marvel’s Thor: The Mighty Avenger, Fred the Clown) and more.
Literally hundreds of artists submitted artwork for the book. Michael Cavna of the Washington Post was sporting a review copy at the Herblock Price Dinner a few weeks back.  It is a stunning piece of work and a portion of the proceeds from the book will go directly to the Michael J. Fox foundation to support Parkinson’s research.
Trust me, you’re going to want a copy.
As fate would have it, we’ve got an EVENT for that!
On June 10th the Small Press Expo is co-hosting a book signing / fundraiser / celebration / release party / hoedown for Team Cul de Sac at One More Page Books in Arlington, Virginia. Many of the contributing artists will be in attendance and, we hope, Richard will be able to make it as well.
Everyone who picks up a copy of Team Cul de Sac at the event will get a free one day pass to SPX 2012 for this fall. Not a bad little bonus.
We’re thrilled to be able to work on this with the folks at One More Page. Independent bookstores are a national treasure and we jumped at the chance to throw our - admittedly somewhat waifish - weight behind this fantastic event.
So, here’s the bonafide deets:
Team Cul de Sac Fundraiser / Book Signing
Sunday June 10, 2012 5-7PM
One More Page Books
2200 N. Westmoreland Street, #101Arlington, VA 22213
Please, Tumblr friends throw a few reblogs on this so we can spread word of the event far and wide.  It’s a great book celebrating great work for a great cause.

REMINDER!!!
GUY DELISLE @ POLITICS & PROSE ON 4/26 - THAT’S THURSDAY!
We’re co-sponsoring this appearance with P&P and I hope you’ll all turn out.
(Well, at least the DC-area folks!)
And here’s the thing…
Everyone who gets a book signed by Guy at the event gets a free pass to SPX 2012.
spx:

Who says you have to wait until September for some SPX action?
Not us!
The Small Press Expo is co-sponsoring a tremendously cool comics event for our DC-area people, hosted by our good buds at Politics and Prose (if you ask me, the crown jewel of Washington, DC’s independent bookstores).
The incredible Guy Delisle is coming to Politics & Prose on April 26th, touring in support of the English translation of his latest graphic novel, Jerusalem, debuting this month from our friends at Drawn & Quarterly.
D&Q has a great preview of Jerusalem online that you should most assuredly check out if you are unfamiliar with Guy’s work. Delisle is famous for his first-person travelogues from places like Burma, North Korea and China.
In Jerusalem he recounts a year his family spent in Israel while his wife worked with Doctors without Borders.  Originally published last year as Chroniques de Jérusalem, the graphic novelwon the Angoulême Comics Festival Prize for Best Album in 2012.
As a little extra bonus, EVERYONE who picks up a signed copy of Jerusalem at the April 26th event will also receive a FREE PASS to the 2012 Small Press Expo.
That’s pretty rad, right?
We would absolutely love it if you’d help share the word about the event.
So tell your comics-loving pals to come on out next Tursday, April 26th to see Guy Delisle at Politics and Prose. Start time is 7:30 PM!
Let’s show Guy a great welcome in DC!

2013 Special Guests

Small Press Expo is pleased to announce Seth, Gary Panter, Lisa Hanawalt, Gene Yang and Frank Santoro as special guests at SPX 2013, to be held Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15.  We are honored that both Seth and Gary Panter will be making their first SPX appearances at this year’s show.

Seth
Creator and advocate of a Canadian design aesthetic, Seth is best known to the comics world as the artist/writer of the long running Palookaville comic, as well as his graphic novels Wimbledon Green and George Sprott (1895-1975), which was originally serialized in the New York Times. He is also known for his book design work for such series as The Complete Peanuts, Nancy and Melvin Monster, in addition to The Portable Dorothy Parker.

Gary Panter
Painter, poster artist, cartoonist, commercial artist, and set designer, polymath Gary Panter has covered the gamut. Best known to the comics world for his long running, post-apocalyptic Jimbo series as well as his graphic novel Dal Tokyo, he also won an Emmy Award for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, and the Chrysler Award for his influence in graphic design.

Lisa Hanawalt
Lisa Hanawalt has vaulted from her Ignatz Award winning mini-comics Stay Away From Other People and I Want You, to illustrating for such periodicals as the New York Times Op-Ed page, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Bloomberg Business Week, as well as McSweeney’s and The Believer. Her latest book is My Dirty Dumb Eyes, a compendium of her work being published this May by Drawn & Quarterly.

Gene Yang
Gene Yang, creator behind the award winning American Born Chinese, is returning to the graphic novel field with a two volume set, Boxers & Saints, to be released this fall by First Second Books. Set in China in 1900, it tells the story of the Boxer rebellion and how the teemagers of the day used their “super heroes” from Chinese opera as inspirations to fight against foreign invaders.

Frank Santoro
Frank Santoro is back with his latest work, Pompei, published by Picturebox. His Storeyville was one of the most influential comics of the 1990’s, leading to its reprinting in book form in 2007. He now runs the Santoro Correspondence Course For Comic Book Makers, which carries on the tradition of correspondence courses for cartoonists that stretches back over century, now in an online form utilizing the latest in collaborative technology.
