Benefit Print Sale

Hey. You know that saying, when it rains, it pours? Well, it’s been hailstorming right over my family this week. This afternoon my Dad fell two Stories off of scaffolding while working. He survived, thankfully, and also has no head trauma, was not knocked unconscious, or paralyzed. However, he did break his left hand, his foot, and possibly his left shoulder. He’ll be unable to work for 2 months. Thankfully he is covered by my mom’s insurance, but my mom has to take an extended period of time from work off to take care of him.  I’m also currently unemployed due to having just spent the past 3 months traveling for Outliers. We got hit pretty hard by the 2008 housing market crash and the IRS seized all of our family savings two years ago. I’ve never seen my mom look as worried as she did at the hospital tonight.

So, this is what I can do.  I’ve got a whole bunch of Digital Chromogenic 8x10” artist proofs listed for $25.00 on my online web store, here: http://elleperez.bigcartel.com. Art makes really good holiday presents! Or looks good on your wall!

Any profit is going to go keeping our family afloat for the next few months.

Anything on my website is available by emailing me at elle.s.perez@gmail.com in any size.

Thanks y’all. I wish your family, biological or chosen, health and safety this season.

Elle

ps: I’m working a job in Baltimore this weekend, so print orders will start going out on Monday, December 5th.

Elle is wonderful, their photos are wonderful, and I really hope you’ll seriously consider buying a print.

Craig Thompson’s HABIBI Debuts at SPX 2011 to Benefit CBLDF!

A couple of days ago I lamented that we’d have Craig Thompson at SPX a few weeks before his new book comes out. Well you’ll have to forgive that little bit of subterfuge, because there’s this:

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is proud to host Craig Thompson at this year’s Small Press Expo, and to premiere his eagerly awaited graphic novel HABIBI! Through a special arrangement with Random House, a benefit preview edition of 100 signed & numbered copies of the graphic novel will be available to donors who contribute $100 or more to the CBLDF at SPX. These copies will be available on a first-come, first served basis when the show opens on Saturday, September 10. HABIBI hits stores on September 20.
Hot damn, y’all.

Let's do something for one of our own in Joplin, MO.

Hugh’s strip is extremely funny and he’s got a mighty fine Tumblr for you to throw a follow on as well.

Crimes Againt Huge Manatees

If you’ve got a few minutes and a few dollars to spare perhaps you could lend a hand to Hugh and the other folks suffering through the devastation in Joplin.

mar-see-ah:

Crimes Against Hugh’s Manatees is written by the incredibly friendly and helpful Hugh. He and his family live in Joplin, MO, which was hit by a horrendous tornado yesterday, less than a quarter mile from his house. And while his family and house are fine, they have no power and no idea when it will come back, and while they are in a better position than many, obviously there will be expenses for his family.

Anyway, if you have $2 to spare, the first year of his webcomic is available for download as a high quality PDF (I have it, it’s amazing, fun to print out at work and flip through regularly), for $1.99.

2013 Special Guests

Small Press Expo is pleased to announce Seth, Gary Panter, Lisa Hanawalt, Gene Yang and Frank Santoro as special guests at SPX 2013, to be held Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15.  We are honored that both Seth and Gary Panter will be making their first SPX appearances at this year’s show.

Seth
Creator and advocate of a Canadian design aesthetic, Seth is best known to the comics world as the artist/writer of the long running Palookaville comic, as well as his graphic novels Wimbledon Green and George Sprott (1895-1975), which was originally serialized in the New York Times. He is also known for his book design work for such series as The Complete Peanuts, Nancy and Melvin Monster, in addition to The Portable Dorothy Parker.

Gary Panter
Painter, poster artist, cartoonist, commercial artist, and set designer, polymath Gary Panter has covered the gamut. Best known to the comics world for his long running, post-apocalyptic Jimbo series as well as his graphic novel Dal Tokyo, he also won an Emmy Award for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, and the Chrysler Award for his influence in graphic design.

Lisa Hanawalt
Lisa Hanawalt has vaulted from her Ignatz Award winning mini-comics Stay Away From Other People and I Want You, to illustrating for such periodicals as the New York Times Op-Ed page, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Bloomberg Business Week, as well as McSweeney’s and The Believer. Her latest book is My Dirty Dumb Eyes, a compendium of her work being published this May by Drawn & Quarterly.

Gene Yang
Gene Yang, creator behind the award winning American Born Chinese, is returning to the graphic novel field with a two volume set, Boxers & Saints, to be released this fall by First Second Books. Set in China in 1900, it tells the story of the Boxer rebellion and how the teemagers of the day used their “super heroes” from Chinese opera as inspirations to fight against foreign invaders.

Frank Santoro
Frank Santoro is back with his latest work, Pompei, published by Picturebox. His Storeyville was one of the most influential comics of the 1990’s, leading to its reprinting in book form in 2007. He now runs the Santoro Correspondence Course For Comic Book Makers, which carries on the tradition of correspondence courses for cartoonists that stretches back over century, now in an online form utilizing the latest in collaborative technology.
